Trained as a Chartered Accountant with Arthur Young in Glasgow and London, admitted to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland in 1973.

Set up practice in partnership in 1973 and practised in three firms over twenty years.

The final practice was sold to Martin Aitken & Co in 1993. By this time he had already developed and pursued an interest in small scale corporate finance work.

Barwell Plc was formed in 1993 as a holding company for a number of companies in which the Rt Hon Viscount Gough had an interest and this became a full time commitment for him through Barwell Consulting Limited, (the group's management services company) in late 1993. The Venture Capital Investment activity of Barwell has been developed from this base, investing sums in the range of £75,000 to £250,000 and usually becoming involved in the financial control or monitoring of the investee company.

In 2003 Barwell became an early partner with the Scottish Co-Investment Fund.

Currently the Barwell portfolio consists of twenty two active investments. These are all start up and early stage companies and for many of them the addition of his financial experience and accounting management is particularly valuable.
